The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy proprietor.
