A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
