Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
