The Journey of a Movement is often characterized by distinct phases.
1. The Core Concept
A charismatic leader or coaches propose a revolutionary approach pledging a panacea for disconnected individuals.
So here we are. They’re getting ready to challenge the establishment down in Brisbane. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. A lone figure, naked, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT displayed prominently as a statement, has emerged from the field and is being led away under a blanket towards an inconclusive loan stint elsewhere.
Remember the early days, when everything was fresh? The days of Bazball 1.0, of pure instinct.
2. Initial Adoration
Cult leaders guarantee a fresh beginning, hope for a future, camaraderie, salvation within a community who all believe in the method.
What was this thing at first? A team united feeling good. Body art. Forearms. Focus. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, England’s players insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically because if it doesn’t exist, what did we see?
However, everyone understands its essence. It’s the player executing a stroke so outrageous it’s beyond belief. It’s the adrenaline of the captain in ultimate mode, an expression conveying: focused titan, rugged appearance, hair woven from beaver hide, genuinely raw you half-expect to glance over and see him playing at mid-off shirtless holding a fish.
It’s Ben Duckett often seen speaking publicly, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Certainly, the energy, for a significant period, was entirely positive.
3. A New Life
Development stage. Cohesion maintained through repetition of key phrases. These ideas are often illogical to prove commitment.
Is it just me? The criticism, the fury, the disappointment following the initial loss appears excessive, unwarranted. The performance was poor in Perth, as history shows. They were dominated defensively in a short span when tactics failed, outplayed by the opponent batting like England but better, adjusting to the pitch, a man playing with brilliance.
Now there is the criticism, the anger, the view of the sport as a disgrace. The opinion suggests that defeat must be total, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, destroyed, overwhelmed through sheer skill of the bowler’s action, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, marking achievements modestly as if receiving a nice new fishing rod. What impact will this have?
4. Hate Bonding
Problems arise from failures in the plan. But the cult cannot admit errors. It begins to thrive on hostility externally.
In truth, half a week out the next match, we’ve entered an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this movement. Victory is possible in the next Test with bold tactics. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. And if they do lose it seems we could be witnessing the death cult phase.
Prior to that, there are two things to consider about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of light and heat, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. Criticism followed, which demonstrated as it’s known the best way of proving lack of cult status is should followers respond with anger objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.
Recent events recently are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball has now become the cult. We have a uniformly angry internet, critical analysts, images of frustrated travelling fans missing out on play, reminiscent of investors demanding recourse.
Conversely, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation towards the unconventional visitors, stating, hey, that thing you love and have developed as one way of separating yourself from others, well, it’s all a bit of a gag in the end old boy.
And this is the real point. All movements are similar. The approach was a phenomenon because cricket is a cult. Or rather, the sport in England is closed, a group, an elite gathering, a closed world with a long history of ceremonial past supporting it. It has long been where influence is guarded. It’s the imperial sport of the British, the pioneering brand. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.
The team have been isolated within this world from a young age. In trying to escape from it, to build a better atmosphere, they are mirroring their upbringing, building another enclosure, a limited community, but now with a new team and a leader promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.
Stay present. Embrace challenges. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
Considering this, now is the time to have some sympathy for Bazball, to appreciate its good points, which are significant. How to define it? Encouraging expression. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
