Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media

The experimental drug, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Express Worries

However, doctors and pharmacists have cautions that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Some professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Platform Reaction and Material Elimination

According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic content and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform secure and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also discovered groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, populated with images of weight loss, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at residence.

After minutes of joining one group, a seller posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should be used, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it regularly monitored harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Warnings

“Individuals are administering substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously encountered patients injured by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
