The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
